Year 3 children enjoyed an unusual and exciting afternoon handling ancient artefacts from around the world when they were visited by two archaeologists from the Bath & Camerton Archaeological Trust.

The trust’s Educational Officer, Tavis Walker  and Les Hayes brought with them a fascinating collection of tools, implements and other remains from archaeological sites as far away as Vietnam, together with items found locally.

The children, who are currently doing a project on ancient history saw a presentation on the techniques used in excavation. They were also given a number of practical tasks, including trying to guess the uses of the different tools and placing them in order of age. As well as simple stone tools and weapons, the collection included decorative Roman pottery and some items of much more recent origin. A tooth from a woolly mammoth, dug up in London captured a great deal of interest from the children, who couldn’t believe how big it was.

Commenting on the visit, Mr Hayes said, “The children were extraordinarily attentive – they were really gripped by having this close contact with the remote past .”

In the spring a visit is planned to the trust’s site at Upper Row Farmhouse, near Norton St Phillip, where the children will try their hand at some real fieldwork, including digging and using equipment to detect building remains below the surface.

The work of the trust has twice been featured on the hit TV series ‘Time Team'.
