Aquathon Championships at Kingswood School

Mon 29 Jun, 2009

On Saturday 27th June, 22 girls from Year 3-6 took part in the annual ‘Aquathon’ Championships at  Kingswood School. The Y3 & 4 combined team consisted of 15 girls who endured a 72m swim and a 750m run. The Y5 & 6 combined team consisted of 7 girls who completed a 108m swim and a 1000m run. The event saw 150 competitors all ready and raring to go… With the Y3 & 4’s up first, it was straight into the pool for their first discipline. Swimming 4 lengths of the pool, all girls completed it in great style and speed, showing their potential in this discipline at such a young age. With outstanding swims from Laura and Izzy McNab, Emily Richardson, Bethan Hughes, Sophie Garcia and Imogen Clayton, the girls were off to a great start. Izzy McNab tumble turned at every end of the pool, attracting the attention of parents and teachers alike. All 15 girls completed the swim with ease and were off to change, ready for the run! Out on the track, the girls set off and made light work of a gruelling course! They ran effortlessly from start to finish enjoying the experience along the way. When all 15 had crossed the finishing line, it was clear that the girls had given everything! The occasion was memorable and fun, with great results… The Years 5 & 6 then set off on the 6 lengths swim of the pool after watching their younger counterparts. Making the distance look easy, they quickly changed in transition and headed to the start line for their run. With Charlotte Penney first to go, Sophie Langman and Kathini Logut were next in line. For the Y5 team, Isabelle Philpotts led the team off, followed closely by Alex Hayman, Alice Pugsley and Imogen Selley. After running for a few minutes, the girls came into sight and it was Kathini Logut who came in first for Y6, followed a few metres behind by Sophie Langman and then Charlotte Penney. The Year 5’s then made their way in, in quick succession demonstrating how far they have come this year with their endurance. A tired set of girls saw a few tears of emotion at the end, and this clearly shows us how hard the girls work at these events. At the final presentation, everyone received a medal for competing. However, in the Years 3 & 4 category, the Royal High Junior School took an overall 3rd place with Laura McNab (Y3) and an individual 1st place with Izzy McNab (Y4). What a performance by the sisters who really did shine on the day! We certainly have a huge amount of potential coming through the ranks. In Years 5 & 6 we had an individual 4th place with Kathini Logut (Y6) and an individual 2nd place with Sophie Langman (Y6). This has been without doubt one of the Junior School’s most successful years, and what a way to end it! We are so very proud of all the girls who took part this weekend in such a well organised and challenging event. The girls really are reaping the rewards from the swim programme and I look forward in great anticipation, to the next few years of nurturing the wonderful talent coming through. Well done to everyone who took part, what a team! A very proud occasion indeed! Thank you also to all the parents who came to support on the day. Your continued encouragement and support is greatly appreciated by us all.
