More About Our Infants

It is important to us that we offer a broad curriculum with something for everybody to enjoy. Some girls excel in the formal academic activities, but there are various events throughout each year that help to develop different skills and talents.

From Reception Class pupils will take home a reading book and sounds to practise alongside handwriting practice. In Years 1 and 2 girls will also bring key spelling words and multiplication table facts to learn. This should not be onerous and parental involvement enables secure learning and steady progress to be made. At Christmas time the girls can be seen transformed into angels, shepherds and kings. Their ability to learn words and songs for our traditional Nativity plays is quite remarkable. Easter time finds them rolling brightly coloured eggs down the grass slope and hunting for Spring treasures around the garden.

Then in the Summer term they have the opportunity to participate in our Sports Day. Some like to run, whilst others prefer the egg and spoon or the obstacles races, but all are encouraged to be good sports and to enjoy taking part.

Every class leads an assembly to which parents are invited. This year we have celebrated Harvest, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day and heard about the importance of ‘Our Homes’. It is a joy to see the girls thrive and grow in confidence in so many different situations.

Educational trips are also an important part of school life and the children are able to enjoy a wide range of experiences. They have dressed up in pinafores for a morning in a very strict Victorian schoolroom; learned about glass blowing and visited a local farm and the zoo for a ‘hands on’ approach. Visitors to the school have included police officers, a chef and two doctors.

We like to feel that we encourage each and every child to grow in independence and confidence, so that they are able to develop a real love of learning and achieve their potential in as many areas as possible before moving on into Year 3 and the rest of the Junior department.
