Scottish Piper comes to Junior School Assembly
Fri 25 Jan, 2008
Children at The Royal High Junior School enjoyed a week of themed activities leading up to ‘Burns Night’ on Friday.
All things Scottish were celebrated. The children read some of the Ayrshire Bard’s famous poems and performed a selection of Scottish folk songs. Many have also had their first taste of traditional Caledonian cuisine. Haggis was served for lunch on Tuesday, along with stovies, (a traditional dish, using ‘tatties’, meat, dripping and all the leftovers from the Sunday roast). The children have also been doing internet research to find out more about Scottish culture and history.
The highlight of the week was the visit by Pipe Major Malcolm Morse, who piped the children in to assembly on Wednesday morning, wearing his full ceremonial dress. For most of the children this is the first time they have seen or heard bagpipes in live performance. Pipe Major Morse (who uses the Scottish version of his name ‘Calum Mor’ for his appearances), talked to the children about the history and traditions of piping in Scotland.
