First, second and third in duathlon battle
Mon 24 Nov, 2008
On Saturday 22nd November, 6 girls from the Royal High Junior School took part in the inaugural Prior Park Duathlon. On a bitterly cold morning, the girls seemed in high spirits and eager to get started! Changed and ready to swim, the girls waited nervously for their turn in the pool. First up were the Year 5 squad of Isabelle Philpotts and Alex Staines. Showing great technique and style over the 54m swim, they cruised their way to the finish. Next up were the Year 6 team comprising of Charlotte Penney, Meg Norman, Sophie Langman and Kathini Logut. Once again in great style, the girls cruised the 90m swim, showing their prowess in the water.
Then onto the quick change and transition period into the run…With speedy changing from the girls, they were lined up at start ready to run. Leading the way was Isabelle Philpotts and Alex Staines on the 1km course. They ran with great heart and passion pushing every step of the way. At half way, both girls were close on each other’s heels, testing the ability of one another. Then striding to the finish came Isabelle followed closely by a distraught Alex who had given absolutely everything! An outstanding contribution of effort on both counts!
Then came the battle of the Year 6’s! Setting off at great speed and using good stride lengths to cover the distance, the Year 6 team moved quickly off into the distance. It wasn’t long before they came back into view, testing each other’s limits and ability! They pushed hard as a team all the way to the finish, and in wonderful style to produce some outstanding performances. It was a real pleasure to watch such talented individuals push each other all the way to the finish line, and still congratulate each other on their performances whatever the outcome. Real sportsmanship in every sense! The girls were shattered but performed magnificently. They represented both themselves and their school in exemplary fashion, achieving our best ever results to date. Well-done team!
The final results meant that Isabelle Philpotts came 3rd overall in the Year 5 category, Charlotte Penney came 2nd overall in the Year 6 category, pipped to the post by 2 seconds by Sophie Langman who won the overall title for this event.
A big thanks also to all the parents who braved the bitter cold to come and support the girls on the day. Your continued encouragement is very much appreciated.
