GDST Gymnastics Competition

Thu 26 Mar, 2009

On Wednesday 11th March, 6 girls from the Royal High Junior School took part in the annual Girls' Day School Trust Gymnastics Championships. It was an early rise for all involved but lots of excitement in preparation for the event. With their hair beautifully presented and make-up on, the girls were ready and raring for action! That was of course after the dash of Lucozade and hot chocolate from the service station to replenish some lost energy from talking the whole way to London on the bus! After a late arrival, the girls did not have long to change and practice their events. As usual, the girls presented themselves in a very mature and professional manner, using the time they had to great effect. With some warming up on the vault and some on the floor, it was going to be a very competitive and entertaining competition. The girls started on the vault and were fully focussed before delivering some exceptional standards from this piece of apparatus. The whole team were outstanding in their performances and really did themselves and their school proud. Meg Norman came top, with Sophie Langman, Ellie Irish Emma Russell and Charlotte Penney not far behind on the score. Then came the floor routines, where the girls were really in their element! They were up against some stiff competition but were never the less, not intimidated in any way. They moved gracefully yet with such energy around the allocated floor space, executing the most complex of skills within their routines. With great encouragement and support from each other, they presented some of the most difficult and spectacular routines we have seen to date but were unfortunately a little disappointed by the marks given out for them on the day. However, Caroline and several members of staff from other schools had made comment in light of these outstanding performances, so all the effort certainly did not go unnoticed by everyone!  Mrs Brett who accompanied the girls was delighted with their performances and said they conducted themselves in an exemplary manner throughout. She also felt particularly privileged to have been asked to attend and is already planning her dates around next year’s competition! A special mention goes to all the above girls and Mariah Minter, who took part in this competition. Well done to all the girls involved. You delivered some of the best Gymnastics the school has seen and we are all very proud of you. All that hard work has finally paid off! You certainly have set the standards for others to aspire to! The team finished 5th overall and should be congratulated on their efforts and achievements. Super stars in the making! Keep up the great work!
