Independent Schools Netball Championships
Fri 27 Feb, 2009
The girls got off to a slow start after a late arrival from the opposition. With the weather cold and wet, it was always going to be a testing tournament. Moving the ball swiftly from end, the girls found themselves attacking and defending equally on both counts! They created good opportunities to score a goal, but unfortunately didn’t manage to put the first few attempts away. After a gruelling first match, the girls were very unfortunate to be beaten 2-1 against Colston’s.The second match saw the Royal High School take on Monkton Combe. This time, they were out the starting blocks and on a mission to make an impression on the opposition and they really did! Moving the ball with great accuracy and pace across the court, they won the match 4-2.The third game was against the Paragon, which was always going to be a psychological battle after losing 18-2 to them earlier in the season. However, with a lot learnt from previous experiences, the girls took every aspect of their game to the court and were outstanding. They defended well and used the long ball to great effect, capitalising on errors from the start. With height not on our side, they used flat ball to outwit their opponents and finish the game with a 2-2 draw. The fourth and penultimate match saw a close contest of skill against Kingswood, where umpires played a crucial role in the overall score line. The girls played extremely well and really impressed with their court craft and ability to move the ball at great pace from end to end. However, with missed opportunities at goal, the score line was always going to be difficult to increase. The end result meant that the Royal High School lost 5-2.The final match was against KES who had not lost a game all day, so were always going to be hard to beat. The girls took the first goal from the centre pass and caused an early upset from the whistle. They then found themselves defending hard from some unfortunate errors of passing, which KES capitalised on immediately. With the girls fighting and battling hard to reduce the deficit the final score meant that the girls lost 4-1 and were placed 5th overall at the Tournament.Every member of the team played a crucial and important role today and should be very proud of their achievements both on and off the court. They were exemplary in their professionalism and sportsmanship on every level and produced some exceptionally mature and talented Netball at this tournament. It should be noted how many external adults and teachers have commented on the girls style, charisma and exceptional level of skill which they consistently performed at. It is a very different style of game from any other school, but one that demonstrates their ability to move the ball at such speed and over such distance in Y6! Well done girls the start of something very special to come.Player of the match: Whole team with a special mention to Olivia Jamieson, Charlotte Penney, Meg Norman and Izzy Hodgson for their work rate and leadership on the day.
