Mathematics
We think Maths is exciting, beautiful and immensely satisfying. If you are a top mathematician, we hope to give you the chance to spread your wings. If you find Maths difficult, we would like you to develop confidence and begin to enjoy its challenges.
We have 5 dedicated Maths classrooms and access to a range of teaching software which is used to make concepts easier to understand.
Year 7 to 9
Maths is taught in 5 sets. You are placed in a set from your entrance test result but there is a fair amount of movement between the sets over the years. There are usually 25 pupils in the first set and about 10 in the fifth set. There should be lots of opportunities to ask questions and clear up problems in class but you can also go to Maths Help on Friday to have some one-to-one tuition on a topic you are finding difficult. We write a maths test every term so that you can check that you understand the work which has been covered. If you are taking your learning seriously, you will make sure that you do all the revision sheets for each section. For those of you who like Maths puzzles, there is the chance to enter the Maths Challenge and Team Maths challenge each year. Some girls in year 7 go to the exciting Masterclasses held by the Royal Institute of Mathematics at Bath University.
Years 10 -11 (GCSE)
We follow the Edexcel linear syllabus for IGCSE. (International GCSE) and by year 10 you will have made good headway into the syllabus. This is an increasingly popular syllabus in the UK. It is recognised by UCAS and all Further education colleges.
Click here to see the IGCSE specification.
The IGCSE is divided into 2 tiers, Higher and Foundation. Most of you will be writing the Higher paper (A* to D grades available) but some of you will be entered for the Foundation level where we would hope that you will be able to tackle the papers with confidence and get a C grade. In most years there is 100% pass rate at GCSE Maths.
